Glandular System Products Among their many functions, glands regulate emotions, promote growth, determine sexual identity, control body temperature and assist in the repair of injured tissue.
The glandular system is made up of the pituitary, adrenals, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, pancreas, and ovaries or testes.
The pituitary is often called the master gland because it secretes hormones that regulate virtually every other gland in the body. The adrenals secrete several hormones. Adrenaline (epinephrine) is well-known: it stimulates the heart, keeps blood pressure normal and raises blood sugar levels. Along with making sex hormones, these glands secrete hormones that help regulate metabolism. The thyroid heavily influences growth and metabolic rate (i.e. the level of activity within the body). That's why the thyroid should be checked when a person is either overweight or underweight. The thyroid also influences our emotions, intellectual ability and physical vitality. Acting in concert with the thyroid in controlling the balance of calcium is the parathyroid. The thymus plays a key role in producing the immune system's T-cells. T-cells circulate in the blood and lymph to help protect the body from invaders or malignant cells. The pancreas has two main functions: 1) to manufacture enzymes that help digest food, and 2) to secrete insulin, a hormone that helps regulate the amount of glucose (a type of sugar in the blood). Glucose is used for energy. Ovaries regulate the reproductive process through hormone secretions. Ovulation is the release of an egg for an ovary. Finally, testes manufacture and store spermatozoa.
